At Chisholm Hunter we want to make sure your cherished pieces stay in good condition. We invite you to visit any of our stores at least once a year for our complimentary jewellery cleaning service. Whilst your jewellery is being cleaned we will ensure that the settings, clasps, chains and stones are secure. While we offer this service, we recommend following the advice below to help maintain your jewellery.

Do not wear your jewellery while doing heavy or rough work (such as cleaning, gardening or performing sports activities) avoid contact with gritty substances and swimming due to the chlorine in pools.

Remove your jewellery when applying beauty products such as moisturiser and perfume. These can clog up your diamond setting and even penetrate some porous coloured gemstones. Don't let your jewellery come in contact with chlorine, bleach or harsh chemicals when you are doing household chores.

It’s best to store each item of jewellery separately to avoid scratches. Keep chains fastened and lay them flat so that they do not tangle.

Take care to protect your jewellery from impact against hard surfaces. Even a diamond can chip if hit with enough force and at the right angle. Gemstones such as ruby, emerald, opal, pearl, tanzanite and tourmaline are particularly delicate.

Make sure that your jewellery is insured. Most insurance companies can include your jewellery under your home insurance, but you can always opt to have it insured separately. Ask your Sales Professional in store for more information.

You should only need to clean your jewellery periodically if you follow the steps above.

  • Gently rub platinum, gold and silver jewellery with a soft, clean cloth to maximise shine.
  • Diamond jewellery can be brought to life by careful cleaning with a soft brush and jewellery cleaning solution which is available at Chisholm Hunter stores or better still we can ultrasonically clean diamonds in store while you wait.
  • Always rinse and dry thoroughly after cleaning. Do not use abrasive cleaners on your jewellery.

All precious metals scratch, and platinum is no exception. It is unique in that the metal is only displaced, not lost. Over time, platinum develops a natural patina that many people prefer over the 'as new' appearance. When this happens, you can have your jewellery refurbished to look like new again.

Pure gold is naturally yellow. It can be given a white appearance by mixing it with other base metals. All white gold jewellery is enhanced by rhodium plating to give a highly reflective appearance. General wear, polishing or buffing will eventually result in the rhodium plating being removed. This is normal for white gold. To maintain the highly reflective rhodium finish of white gold jewellery, we advise that you have it periodically refurbished and re-rhodium plated to look like new again.

Yellow and Rose gold jewellery needs the same level of care. Avoid exposing gold to hard knocks or blows – if scratches, dings or even bends occur, the rings can often be repaired by one of our professional jewellers. Gold doesn’t often tarnish. Instead, these metals develop a rich patina over time – it can take a lifetime for the patina to begin to develop, and a patina on a vintage or antique gold piece is highly desirable and adds to the value of the ring.

Silver is a soft precious metal and should be treated with care as it is softer than gold. Silver discolours over time due to oxidisation. Regular cleaning and polishing will restore the original look of your silver jewellery. You should treat catches, links and stems on earrings with particular care, however re-adjusting clasps and fittings may be required over time.

Freshwater pearls appear in a wide variety of shapes and natural colours. Keep them away from household chemicals including perfume, makeup and hairspray. Chemicals found in these products can dull the luster of your pearls.

Before putting your pearls away, wipe them with a soft cloth and store them separately from other jewellery to avoid scratching their tender surfaces. We recommend that pearl necklaces and bracelets are re-strung every 2 years.
